RCMP say after travelling on a highway in the wrong direction, a 78-year-old Winnipeg man is dead

On Tuesday night at 11:40 p.m. RCMP were alerted of a vehicle travelling eastbound on the Perimeter Highway between Henderson Highway and Main Street on a patch of road that was designated for westbound traffic.

While on route, RCMP in Headingly was alerted that a multi-vehicle crash had occurred at the location.

Officers discovered three vehicles were involved in the crash when arriving.

Two of the three people involved were taken to the hospital. One of those transported was a 78-year-old man whom RCMP say was declared dead at the hospital.

After investigating, police say the deceased senior was travelling eastbound in the westbound lanes, colliding head-on with a westbound vehicle being driven by a 21-year-old man from Stony Mountain. Both vehicles were then struck by a westbound semi-truck that was being driven by a 41-year-old man from Winnipeg.

The 21-year-old is seriously, but non-life-threateningly injured and taken to the hospital. The 41-year-old is uninjured.

RCMP Central Traffic Services and a Forensic Collision Reconstructionist are investigating.
