The mother of a crash victim's children says he died while protecting others on the road.

Devin Fehr was not supposed to be in Winnipeg this weekend, but it was where he took his last breath.

"I just want everybody to send their prayers to their family so they know he is in good hands with Jesus."

Devin and his boss came home from Fort McMurray to Winnipeg and were supposed to leave just before Christmas. While in Winnipeg, they decided to stay an extra week. With the extra time, Devin bought a new vehicle and was going to take it back with him to his home in Alberta. That new vehicle is what he crashed in at the Fermor Avenue and Beaverhill Boulevard intersection on Saturday evening, leaving him brain dead.

"I didn't think it was true," Taylor Fehr says. "Devin had lots of battles before, but we didn't think he would ever go so soon, especially in such a tragic way. I know it was unintentional and he was trying to save the other people on the road."

Taylor was 15 years old when she began dating Devin Fehr. After many years together they married and had two children, Kobi and Behlen. They eventually separated but Taylor remained close to Devin's family and was one of the family's first phone calls after the crash.

Taylor soon learnt that someone she knew was the one who called 911.

"She saw him hit the snowbank and lose control of the car," Taylor says. "Instead of going onto Fermor into the lights and smashing other vehicles, he took the yield and lost control. When he hit the median he had flown through the car."

Paramedics rushed him to the hospital where he was put on life support.

Their oldest son, Kobi, said goodbye to his father in the hospital on Sunday. Devin was taken off of the ventilator and after noon, Devin took his last breath. Taylor and her sons went to the intersection to put up a large cross this week.

Prayers for Devin's family

Taylor and Devin's family remained close, despite Devin's personal struggles that he was working through.

"His dad always tried to steer him in the right direction and be there for him and help him along the way. Nobody ever gave up on him."

Taylor says he loved Christmas with his family and is glad he could spend one last Christmas with them, especially his grandmother who was a second mother to him. She is asking for prayers of healing for his family.

"They need as many prayers as they can right now, just because they are falling low," she says. "I just want everybody to send their prayers to their family so they know he is in good hands with Jesus."

Devin's current wife told Taylor that Devin was very loved, and she is now being watched over by him with her parents.

She wants people to remember Devin for his unique laugh and love of sports, and in the lives of his sons.

Taylor says his father Wayne Fehr wants Devin to know "I will always love you."
