An event raising funds for a pro sports ministry is highlighting how a chaplain is coaching athletes in their faith journeys.

The Pro Sports & Faith Night has a circular purpose. The event is raising funds for Athletes in Action Pro Ministry Chaplain Lorne Korol as he guides professional athletes like the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Winnipeg Jets on their spiritual journeys. Some of these athletes will be sharing their testimonies during the event for Korol, which is made possible by Korol's ministry.

"For us, first and foremost, it's an outreach event that we can that people can not only hear the stories of the players but hear the good news of Jesus and that's really what we want, is to use as an outreach," Korol says.

He says the event, which is virtual this year on October 16, serves as outreach as people like Brandon Alexander share their stories.

"You normally don't get to hear that on that sound bite after the game. You know, it's really quite interesting to hear and many of their testimonies are so powerful that people really need a chance to hear them up close and personal."

With a Winnipeg Jets game starting at 9 p.m., Korol is anticipating it being a fantastic "doubleheader" evening with friends at home.

During the pandemic ministry has changes, but along with the distance is a hunger to be closer to God.

"It's been a special time of ministry because I think they, and I, we all appreciate it more than we ever have because of the fact that we're able to do it."

The chaplain is praying that they can continue to be able to do more in-person events, as he says it is a rich time in ministry where people are needing more contact.

The "take and bake" style event will have an auction, with prizes such as a night in a press box suite at a Winnipeg Jets game, a helicopter ride, and a round of golf with Korol and Mark Scheifele. Korol says they have been blessed with prize donations.
