A true Manitoba winter has finally arrived, as the entire province is enveloped under weather warnings Friday evening.

Most of Manitoba finds itself under extreme cold warnings, except for the far northeast, where Churchill and York are under a blizzard warning.

Environment Canada says an arctic ridge of high pressure has allowed for a very cold air mass from the north to sink over Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Along with winds of 10 to 20 km/h, extreme wind chill values of -40 or colder will spread across southern regions of the prairies tonight. In the north wind chill values are expected to reach below -45.

Some areas may rebound slightly from these bitterly cold values Saturday afternoon but extreme cold warnings will likely remain in place for Saturday night into Sunday morning as well.

The City of Winnipeg is expected to see a low of -29 overnight and a wind chill of -44. There won't be much relief Saturday, with a high of -24 and a wind chill value around -36.

These bitterly cold values will remain in the prairies into next week. Overnight lows are expected to reach -30 or below for the next five nights.

Frostbite is possible on exposed skin within minutes, and Environment Canada says the extreme cold puts everyone at risk.

Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

Dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant.
