The province is introducing five initiatives meant to promote a safe government workplace environment, free of harassment.

The initiatives were announced today by Premier Brian Pallister, Sustainable Development Minister Rochelle Squires, Finance Minister Cameron Friesen, and clerk of the executive council Fred Meier.

They include additional avenues for reporting complaints, an external review of policies and procedures, implementing a public reporting process on statistics, launching consultations with government employees, and mandating respectful workplace training for all cabinet and political staff.

Pallister said the culture of concealment is over when it comes to workplace harassment.

"The woman who comes here every morning and cleans the railings on the stairs is as important as Rochelle (Squires) to me on this. Everybody deserves to feel safe in the workplace, everyone," said Pallister.

Former staffers under the previous NDP government have recently come forward, accusing then-cabinet minister Stan Struthers of inappropriate touching during his time in office, and the NDP is accused of failing to act when the women reported it.
