RCMP Manitoba is asking people to stay home this evening as several highways remain closed, and those that are open are in poor winter driving condition.

"We received over 100 calls today regarding stranded motorists and people that were stuck," says RCMP spokesperson, Tara Seel.

Highway closures began in western Manitoba on Monday evening as the blizzard moved into the province, and quickly spread throughout the south on Tuesday. Highways were extremely icy and near-zero visibility was common.

Multiple drivers were stuck in one place on Winnipeg's Perimeter Highway for over five hours

Seel shares some safety tips for people for future similar conditions.

"In blizzard conditions, if you can stay home, that's the safest option. But if it's absolutely necessary for you to head onto the road, there's things you can do. One is, dress warmly."

Bringing along warm winter gear in the vehicle will ensure a person's body stays warm if they break down or get stuck.

"You want to make sure you have a full tank of gas and that somebody is aware of the route that you are taking. If you are on the road and get stranded, please call the police. We may not be able to get to you right away but we need to know where you are."

Seel says it's important to check the tailpipe and clear any snow that has built up, to make sure the carbon monoxide doesn't build up inside the car, causing a potentially life-threatening situation.

"Only turn on your car intermittently to stay warm so that you're conserving fuel."
