A Winnipeg pastor is being honoured next month for uniting people from different faith and cultural backgrounds as one community.

Rev. Bill Millar is being awarded the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for the Advancement of Interreligious Understanding. A statement from the Lieutenant Governor says the retired pastor is a crucial role model to people in the Central Park neighbourhood during his time at Knox United Church.

"Rev. Millar has a wonderful gift to unite communities across cultures and beliefs. A collaborative leader, during his many years as pastor at Knox United Church, he built and maintained relationships with communities outside the conventional parameters of a mainstream Christian congregation," the statement says.

Millar retired four years ago after more than a decade with the congregation.

“Rev. Bill Millar has true passion for building community through faith, respect, inclusion and the building of meaningful relationships with all people. He absolutely exemplifies the spirit of this award,” Lt.-Gov. Janice Filmon says.

She says Millar has played a significant role in making Central Park safer and more welcoming.

Millar will be given the award on January 11 at a ceremony at Government House.
