The Church is in a unique position to "be a part of a suicide safer community," says Chris Harwood, Youth For Christ (YFC) Senior Ministry Director.

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day.

It may seem difficult to get involved, but "the first thing that anyone, especially the church needs to do is to become educated...to learn more about what suicide and mental health looks like," says Harwood.

As believers, we are not only in a great position to intervene in someone's thoughts of suicide and save their life, but we are then in a position to share the gospel and give them the words of life.

Just like First Aid, there is training you can take to help someone looking for a reason to live.

Assist, is a program focusing on suicide prevention to help you and your church feel ready to have these conversations and provide support. Chris Harwood and colleagues at YFC are certified to train staff, youth, community members, and volunteers with suicide intervention field training.

It's important to have your "eyes open for people that [you] encounter, not just in [your] own ministries or families but even at the bus stop who are maybe struggling with thoughts of suicide," says Harwood.

World Suicide Prevention Day is your reminder; to take the time to get involved! Show love, care, and the "hope that we have in Christ through the gospel," says Harwood.
