After three years of reduced speed limits in school zones, many Winnipeggers are still driving too fast.

CAA Manitoba held its annual school zone assessment, observing drivers at three different locations between 7:30 and 9 this morning: at Ecole Victoria-Albert School, Lord Roberts Community School, and Meadow West School.

A total of 1,151 unsafe driving practices were seen. CAA Manitoba president Mike Mager says 352 of those were speeding.

"We're doing this to start the season so people will see it as top of mind and take care for the rest of the season going forward," he says.

Mager doesn't believe anyone would intentionally speed through a school zone, and questioned whether there's a need to highlight speed limit signs, perhaps with lights.

"In my view, it's not about penalizing the drivers for speeding through a school zone, it's what can we do that's fair, to help them."

Some of the other unsafe behaviours observed today include: a texting driver clocked at 75 km/hr in a 50 km/hr zone who ran a red light, double-parking, motorists not stopping for a school bus with its stop sign out, and children improperly restrained in vehicles.
