Environment Canada says the City of Winnipeg and other areas of southern Manitoba can expect 10-20 centimetres of snow this weekend.

Snow will begin over southern Manitoba Friday afternoon and spread northward Friday evening. Snowfall will intensify through the evening hours with accumulations of 10 to 20 cm forecast by the time the snow tapers off on Saturday.

Gusty northwest winds will develop overnight with gusts up to 60 km/h forecast for the City of Winnipeg and into the southern Interlake. These winds combined with the falling snow will lead to areas of reduced visibility in blowing snow.

Winter storm warnings

Areas outside the Perimeter Highway are currently under winter storm warnings. These areas will also see heavy snow, with accumulation totals between 10 and 20 centimetres.

Heavy winds around 70 km/h are also expected to develop overnight on Friday and carry into Saturday. These winds combined with the falling snow will cause significantly reduced visibilities in blowing snow.

People with travel plans this weekend should plan accordingly and take the necessary precautions. Environment Canada says that people should consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.

Winter storm warnings are issued when multiple types of severe winter weather are expected to occur together.

Conditions will gradually improve Saturday afternoon.
