If you already put away the shorts for the year you might want to dig them out again.

"Pretty much for actually most of the southern Prairies - all across southern Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba - will see a vigorous return to summer weather today," Brad Vrolijk with Environment Canada says. Highs in the region will range from the high-20s for Winnipeg and the Red River Valley to to 30 degrees and possibly slightly above the further west you go.

While it's not unusual to hit 30 degrees in September or even early October, Vrolijk says what is not usual is the high humidity expected. "We will see dewpoints climbing up to almost 20 degrees today, which will make it feel extremely humid. We're talking mid-summer humidity is coming back today."

Not only will the daytime highs remind us of mid-July, but so will the overnight lows. "One thing that will be rather anomiolis tonight and tomorrow night is how warm it's going to stay at night. Typically when we get warm weather at this time of the year it cools off at night because it's not particularly humid. But, like I said, we have those dewpoints around 20 developing later today, both tonight and Tuesday night we'll see overnight lows probably somewhere in the 19 to 21-degree range.

"The seasonal daytime high for this time of year is 18 degrees. So, we're going to be having overnight lows warmer than the seasonal high," Vrolijk says.

The heat and humidity will fall just short of the criteria to issue heat warnings, Vrolijk thinks. For southern Manitoba, heat warnings are issued when two or more consecutive days of daytime maximum temperatures are expected to reach 32°C or warmer and nighttime minimum temperatures are expected to fall to 16°C or warmer. Or, when two or more consecutive days of humidex values are expected to reach 38 or higher.

Things will start to cool off a bit on Wednesday when a low-pressure system arrives, but Vrolijk says the humidity will likely last until Wednesday evening. He says that right now it's possible the heat and humidity could return for the weekend.

This is the final week of summer with the fall equinox arriving on Monday, September 25, at 2:50 a.m.
