Winnipeg could be gaining and losing a municipal ward.

A draft report by the Wards Boundaries Commission was published yesterday, and within its recommendations are the creation of a Waverley West ward, and the dissolution of St. Charles.

St. Charles would be absorbed by the St. James and Charleswood-Tuxedo wards.

As well, the report recommends shortening the names of a number of wards, as well as some rearrangements, such as moving the Dugald, Southland Park, St. Boniface
Industrial Park, and Symington Yard areas from the St. Boniface ward to Transcona.

The report notes there are major discrepancies in ward populations, with South Winnipeg-St. Norbert having 68,112 people and St. Charles having only 32,171, though the commission says it recognizes there's more to balancing wards than population.

The changes, if approved, would take effect next September. The next civic election is in October 2018.

The public can make comments on the draft report at a hearing on November 1st. Following the hearing, the commission will make its final recommendations.
