A graduate student in Winnipeg has discovered Canada's first real monster.

A student at the University of Manitoba has discovered Canada's first scientifically sound monster under the Arctic sea ice.

The monster uses eight legs to paddle, has one weak eye, no mouth and is mostly translucent. It's also only 2mm long.

The monster was found by Aurelie Delaforge in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut.  Delaforge is a Ph.D. student at the University of Manitoba. The monster is the first copepod of the Monstrilloida family. There are over 160 different species of Monstrilloida swimming around the world.

Aurelie Delaforge discovered the monster in Cambridge Bay (University of Manitoba)"I find this pretty cool," Delaforge said in a statement. "It's not an everyday thing, discovering new species and it feels incredible."

Delaforge says that she wasn't actually looking for the new species, but during her sampling on the plankton blooms under sea ice, she continued to pull up the monster, which confirmed that it was a local species.

Canada's first official monster is called Monstrillopsis planifrons, or flat headed monster.

"I think this is really important because it brings new information on the biodiversity present in the Arctic," said Delaforge. "It's important to know what's there."

We won't have to worry about this monster coming out from underneath the bed to scare us, but you can now tell your kids that Canada does, in fact, have a real-life monster.
