Prosecutors in the United States are recommending a 25-year sentence for a Manitoba man they say planned to kill on a large scale in hopes of igniting a civil war.

Former Canadian Armed Forces reservist Patrik Mathews faces sentencing on October 28 after pleading guilty to four charges, including illegally transporting a firearm and obstruction of justice.

Prosecutors called for the lengthy term in a 45-page sentencing memo filed in Maryland District Court last week.

It says Mathews was working alongside a white supremacist group hoping for a civil war that would decimate racial and ethnic minorities and subjugate women.
