There are many locations in Winnipeg neighbourhoods to drop off living Christmas trees once the holidays are over.

There are at least one dozen drop-off locations between various organizations to drop off old Christmas trees. All lights, tinsel, and other ornaments must be removed before donating trees at any location.

City of Winnipeg

Each year, the City of Winnipeg collects Christmas trees, turning them into sawdust mulch in January for residents.

Since 1991, 402,533 trees amounting to 1,831 tons of wood chips have gone through the program. Last Christmas, 11,095 trees were dropped off at a city site.

There are 10 drop-off locations in the city.

Vimy Arena, St. Boniface, Fire Station No. 17 and Pan Am Pool are no longer accepting trees on their lots.

The city offers tree pick up, at a charge. Residents are welcome to dispose of their tree in their municipal garbage bins as long as the lid closes. If a resident wishes to wait until the spring, yard waste collection will take the discarded trees but it must only contain small branches of no more than 10 cm or 4 inches in diameter and the overall bundle must be shorter than one meter.

Trees are not recyclable.

Aurora Farm, 4265 Waverley Street

This local farm uses old trees to give their goats a taste of Christmas.

"They love the taste of the needles and bark, and they also love using the branches to scratch themselves!" Aurora Farm writes on Facebook.

The farm can take donations between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. They are currently closed to visitors.

The Forks

The popular tourist destination is repurposing old Christmas trees for its Winter Wonderland.

"Looking for a way to pay your Christmas tree forward? In order to create the Forks Winter Worderland

☃️
we all love, we are looking for some trees to decorate our site with

," the site writes on Facebook.

The trees can be dropped off near their Warming Huts.
