The Winnipeg Humane Society says that this is the "perfect time" to adopt.

As Manitobans commit to staying in their homes, the Winnipeg Humane Society says that they have not seen a decrease in demand for furry companions.

"A pet is wonderful company."

Regulations set out by the Government of Manitoba to adopt at city shelters by-appointment-only has not discouraged people from adopting. Last week, the humane society helped 19 furry friends find a home.

"A shelter is not a place for animals long-term. If this situation is going to continue for another month I would rather have them in a home," CEO Javier Schwersensky says.

Currently, the Winnipeg Humane Society has approximately 12 dogs and thirty cats waiting for homes. Schwersensky himself has a cat and two dogs and loves working at home with them.

"It is wonderful (to work alongside pets). I think they know more sometimes than we give them credit for," Schwersensky says. "If I am at home typing, my pets are more so compliant than my two sons, who are not as compliant."

The shelter has seen people gravitating towards cats and dogs for coworkers as many people will be working from home for the next few weeks.

Schwersensky says dogs are great companions and that his own dogs lay at his feet, keeping them warm as he works. He adds that cats "want what they want" and owners need to find ways, such as putting blankets in the sun, to keep them happy.

"It is actually a perfect time to get to know your companion," he says. "A pet is a wonderful company."

Schwersensky adds that because many people are working from home, they have the ability to spend more time with their animals and can find comfort in the company of their pets as people practice self-isolation.

The Winnipeg Humane Society says they hope to see a rise in fostered animals and adoption as they attempt to "empty out" their shelter in anticipation of more animals arriving at the shelter as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

Schwersensky says health authorities are saying pets are not affected by COVID-19 nor are strong carriers of the illness.

Those wanting to adopt are being encouraged to view available animals and call 204-982-2035 to schedule an appointment.
