The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) is inviting the community to sit down and share a cup of coffee with local police.

Winnipeg's first-ever Coffee With a Cop event will take place on Tuesday, October 10, between 10:00 a.m. and noon at the McDonald's at 664 Portage Avenue.

Coffee With a Cop is a program that began in California in 2011 and has since spread across North America. According to the organization, it was the "result of a brainstorming session. Members of the Hawthorne Police Department were looking for ways to interact more successfully with the citizens they served each day."

The WPS hopes the event will begin a new chapter in community policing.

According to the WPS, there will be "no agenda or speeches, just a chance to ask questions and get to know the officers in your area."

Other events for other parts have Winnipeg have not yet been announced.
