Winnipeg Trails is encouraging everyone to take their bikes out from storage earlier than when the snow melts by giving tips on winter biking.

Leigh Anne Parry, the chair of the Winnipeg Trails Association, gave us her tips on what to do when deciding to bike during winter.

Parry says, "take it slow, wear what you would normally wear if you were walking outside for a couple hours."

Her second tip is researching places in the world such as Finland and the Netherlands that have many citizens biking to work daily in different ways than we North Americans do.

She says, "it's great to ask for help as well from friendships and camaraderies that can form from people who bike more often."

Parry's favourite trails in Winnipeg to bike on include the trail behind Donald Street just off of the Assiniboine trail, the Heart trail, the South Assiniboine trail, and the North Parkway trail. The Winnipeg Trails Association website has a full map of all the accessible trails to give you a mini vacation and feel like a kid again.

February 9 is consequently Bike to Work Day across the world with five events happening right here in Winnipeg throughout the weekend. Pit stops are set up across the city, and a Winter Biking Jam is taking place Friday night at 5:30 p.m. for the public at Meet me at the Bell Tower.

Winnipeg Trails Association would also like to notify people that most bike shops in Winnipeg also will allow you to rent a bike rather than purchasing a new one. This weekend, in particular, many locations have 50% off rental prices for the Bike to Work day events.
