“I’m going to keep fighting,” says Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek, who is currently undergoing his second round of chemotherapy.

The popular TV personality made the commitment to continue on, relying on "God's grace" and prayers from people around the world during a phone call with a fan.

Faithwire reports that 79-year-old Trebek spoke on the phone with Michael Kneeter, a 32-year-old man with autism, after Kneeter's mother was able to track down the game show host.

Following Trebek's stage four pancreatic cancer diagnosis, Kneeter became deeply depressed. His mother, Debbie Stevens, wanted to find a way to cheer him up and set out to connect him with the TV personality he looked up to.

Stevens herself is a survivor of pulmonary fibrosis.

Through research, Stevens was able to come across information about Trebek's son, who operates a restaurant. She reached out to his son, Matthew, in hopes that he might connect her and her son to Trebek himself.

On October 18, 2019, Kneeter and Stevens missed Trebek's call.

The phone rang while Steven's was in the bathroom and her son missed the call. Astounded, they listened afterward to the voicemail message:

My name is Alex Trebek. It is Friday, about 6 o’clock your time. My son, Matthew, who has a restaurant in North Harlem told me that you and your mom had been in contact and you’re fans of the show, and I just wanted to thank you for that, and I appreciate it. I hope you’re well. Maybe someday if you manage to get to Los Angeles, you can come to a taping of the program. That would be great. Hopefully, I’ll still be around hosting it.

Stevens reached out again to Matthew, in hopes Kneeter could still speak with him. Stevens says Matthew instructed her to stay near the phone.

“And in less than five minutes, he called again," Stevens says.

Trebek spoke with Stevens and her son for ten minutes.

“With God’s grace and prayers from people like you, and good wishes from folks everywhere, I’m going to come through like you," Trebek said at one point during the call.

Stevens says Trebek is an "amazing person," and hopes that she will have a chance to see the Canadian host Jeopardy! in person yet.

Trebek has recently admitted that he believes he is "nearing the end" of his life. His first round of chemotherapy was unsuccessful. He is now about to begin his second round of treatment.

The popular TV personality first announced his cancer diagnosis on March 5, 2019. At the time, Trebek said he intended to continue working, "and with the love and support of my family and friends, and with the help of your prayers, also, I plan to beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease."
