A shelter for Winnipeg's homeless was close to being left out on the streets.

Just a Warm Sleep, a program hosted by a group called 1JustCity out of Augustine United Church, got a call early Monday morning that pipes had burst in the church, forcing the group to search for another warm place to house some of the city's less fortunate.

Within an hour, Crescent Fort Rouge United Church and Young United Church in Crossways Common offered to temporarily host the event for the homeless.

About a dozen people take advantage of the program, which runs during the colder months on nights when temperatures are forecast to hit below minus 10.

The group expects to be out of Augustine United Church for about two weeks while crews work to fix the problem.
