Online predators are using new technology to target children online, and these specific offenders are known as “cappers”.

“Cappers” are people who use live streaming services to trick children into performing sexual acts online, and then record it, which can also involve extortion.

The Canadian Centre for Child Protection, through its program Cybertip.ca, has some advice to help parents keep their kids safe while gaming and streaming during the summer months as kids are often on their devices and use technology constantly.

Child online exploitation can happen at any time, and anywhere. Cybertip says being aware of the problem is the first step in keeping children safe.

ps. Setting out the expectation that they’ll be doing random check-ins to see what they’re engaging in. Then, getting parents to be more comfortable in the online space. Learn about what their kids are doing, what the trends are, what their interests are and remain engaged.”

This includes hearing about the latest game the child is focused on, apps they use, and if they’re chatting online with, who that is.

Another important tip they suggest is, “Remind your child that their safety is what is most important to you, and if they come across something or someone online that makes them feel uncomfortable, they can come to you without fear of getting in trouble.”

If you see, read, or hear anything sexual from an adult towards your child online, report it to Cybertip.ca.
