After road closures impacted traffic for nearly the whole day on Wednesday, Winnipeg Police say it is now opening a homicide investigation.

In the early morning of October 16, Winnipeg Police Services (WPS) say they received a report of a male lying on the roadway Main Street between Higgins Avenue and Sutherland Avenue.

Winnipeg Transit drivers were already at the scene when police arrived as they had been stopping buses and blocking one lane of traffic.

WPS says, "An unresponsive adult male was located suffering from injuries. North District General Patrol officers began CPR until paramedics arrived. The male was transported to hospital in critical condition and later died as a result of his injuries."

The 40-year-old deceased male has now been identified as Neilson Catcheway of Winnipeg.

The Winnipeg Police Homicide Unit assumed responsibility for this investigation and kept northbound Main Street closed for several hours to examine the scene.

"It has been determined that the male had been assaulted and a short time later was then struck by an unrelated northbound vehicle," says WPS.

WPS are asking for the driver of the vehicle to come forward as it will provide more information to WPS investigators.

WPS says they, "Hope to be able to provide additional information in the coming days."
