An investigative authority is investigating how and why a 34-year-old inmate died of suicide while in custody.

Manitoba’s Chief Medical Examiner Dr. John Younes says a man died by hanging at Stony Mountain Institution on December 9, 2019.

He was found in his cell by the institution's correctional officers on rounds at 9:50 p.m. They then began CPR, calling emergency services and the local RCMP detachment. The man was declared dead the next morning at 2:22 a.m.

By this time investigators were at Stoney Mountain.

Younes is looking into the suicide to learn more about the circumstances around his death and if anything could have been done to prevent it.
