February 2019 was the busiest month for the Manitoba Public Insurance TIPS Line, according to new data released by the Crown corporation.

The TIPS line is used as a tool to confidently report auto fraud. There were a total of 594 calls in February 2019, compared to 439 in 2018, a 35 per cent increase.

All calls are anonymous, but during this season many callers will admit to being an ex-spouse or ex-partner of a person allegedly defrauding MPI.

Calls are reviewed to determine which are legitimate to ensure innocent customers aren't impacted. The tip line saved upwards of $700,000 for the auto insurance corporation.

All suspicious claims are handled by MPI’s Special Investigation Unit. The SIU closed more than 1,200 investigations in 2019.

You can report auto insurance fraud to the tip line at 204-985-8477 or toll-free 1-877-985-8477.
