A fire in Winnipeg's North End has left one person dead and another fighting for their life.

Emergency crews were called to a bungalow in the 400 block of Boyd Avenue just before 7 a.m. on Tuesday.

When crews arrived on scene the house was already engulfed in flames and smoke could be seen billowing out of the home.

Firefighters located two people in the house. One was pronounced deceased at the scene, while a second person was transported to hospital in critical condition. Two cats also perished in the blaze.

It is unknown at this time if the home was equipped with working smoke alarms.

There is no word on what caused the blaze or a damage estimate at this time.

Fire officials continue to investigate.
