A Winnipeg police officer is being charged by an independent investigation unit after a summer crash.

On June 4, a Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) cruiser was driving in the area of Redwood Avenue and Powers Street at around 7:30 p.m. when it was involved in a crash with a motorcycle. At the time the WPS could not say how the crash occurred.

The motorcycle driver was taken to the Health Sciences Centre in stable condition, and two WPS officers were sent to the hospital and later released.

The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba now says the WPS driver ran a stop sign.

The police officer is being given a Provincial Offence Act ticket for disobeying a traffic control device. The IIU says this is now before the courts.
