A young Winnipeg man is dead after the semi he was driving rear-ended another semi late last week in western Manitoba.

The Manitoba RCMP says that Virden RCMP were called on Friday, March 4 shortly after noon for a two-vehicle collision. The incident occurred on Highway 1, near Provincial Road 256, in the RM of Wallace-Woodworth. The collision involved two semi-trucks with trailers.

Police say that two semi-trucks with trailers were involved in the collision. They believe that the first semi was travelling east on Highway 1 when it rear-ended a second semi that was going in the same direction.

The driver of the first semi, a 23-year-old male from Winnipeg, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Police say he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.

His passenger, a 28-year-old male from Winnipeg, had minor injuries and was treated at the scene. The driver of the second semi, a 36-year-old male from Winnipeg, was not injured.

Highway conditions were poor at the time and police say it may have contributed to the collision.

Virden RCMP continue to investigate.
