'A way to serve the community': Church barbecue gives back to the community
Members of the community gathered at Grace Communion Church, 50 Barnes Street, on Saturday afternoon for their Community Barbecue. The volunteer-led event was free and open to all, offering a range of activities for attendees to enjoy. The activities included face-painting, bouncy castles, and a soccer game. The first of its kind, the church hosted it to reach those in the immediate community. "The big thing we want to accomplish is getting to know our community and allowing our community to get to know us," said Alexander Brandt, the Pastor of Grace Communion Church. Brandt spoke about the decision behind hosting the barbecue as an outreach event, instead of the usual back-to-school garage sale the church has held in the past. "This is an evolution of our back-to-school garage sale. It started as a way to serve the community, and then we figured people were coming for the free barbecue anyway, so we leaned into that," explained Brandt. Saturday's barbecue was about a church reaching the community and demonstrating that Grace Communion Church extends past the four walls of a building.
