Community rallies around local family after 10-year-old son diagnosed with aggressive cancer
A Christian school and the community have been a source of great support after a local family found out their 10-year-old son has an aggressive form of cancer. "August 14, after a week or two of trying to figure out what was ailing my son and find out what was wrong, we finally made our way to the Children's hospital," says Kimberly Dziedzic, the mother of Kwintyn. "August 15, we got the final diagnosis of stage three Burkitt lymphoma. The health care team has been amazing." Kwintyn has pretty much been in the hospital since the diagnosis, and he is expected to be there for treatment for roughly 6 months. "He's finishing up his second round of treatment today. What we found out with Burkitt lymphoma is that it is considered one of the most aggressive forms of cancer and one of the most rare ones to be diagnosed with. It requires a heavy-hitting chemotherapy regimen. At this point, he's doing amazingly well, and I praise God for that." Kwintyn attends The King's School in West St. Paul, just outside of Winnipeg. "His school has been absolutely amazing with the constant prayers," says Kimberly. "The school itself has been a big help with my daughter trying to navigate this as well. And making sure Kwintyn doesn't feel left behind in all this. At this point, he's still doing his studies. His classmates have sent cards, and they sent him a shirt for the Terry Fox Run to wear. The teacher let me know that all the kids in the class are running for him." Last year, during the Terry Fox Run, Kwintyn came in first in his class. "He's very much still his 10-year-old self. Kwintyn is, energetic, would be an understatement. He's the first to get up and help someone. He's a very caring little boy. He loves his friends and family." Flipping the World Upside Down Kwintyn is one of five kids. The Dziedzic family lives near Portage la Prairie. "You don't realize how good you have it until something like this happens, and the everyday things you take for granted. Since this happened, everything has been turned upside down." Kimberly has watched the community around them step up and help in a big way. "You also don't realize the community you have behind you until something like this comes about. In a time where I would be worrying about 'What about this or that,' I have people stepping up saying, 'Don't worry, I got it.' Schedules have been flipped, and work schedules impacted." While Kimberly tries her best to bring the other children to see Kwintyn in the hospital, it's hard with school and agendas. Kimberly and her husband have two teen daughters and three-year-old twin girls at home. "It's been a bit of a balancing act, to say the least. [Please pray] for continued healing and God's grace over Kwintyn and our family. And a sense of peace would be very much welcome." Listening to CHVN Kwintyn enjoys listening to CHVN, 95.1 FM as the family listens to the station all the time in their car. "He has his own little radio that he built in his room from a kit. He's was flipping through, trying to find CHVN. He loves listening." The Dziedzic family appreciates any and all the prayers from people during this difficult time.
