Downtown ministry marks 40 years of outreach, praying for new trailer
A downtown Winnipeg ministry has been sharing food, resources, and the gospel with the most vulnerable population for the last 40 years. "It's a frontline ministry," says Heather Barefoot, the Coordinator with Love Lives Here. "I say it's in the trenches because we minister to street-involved people. The poor, the addicts, the homeless, and there's a lot of mental illness down there. We try to take the good news to people, and it's not an easy task because there's such darkness that we have to push through." Love Lives Here is celebrating 40 years of sharing the gospel and blessing people in need. They have a trailer located on Henry Ave. "The volunteers we have are so committed and consistent. It's a challenge, but it's all worth it. We used to operate two nights a week, and we had a bus going out to where people are trafficked. That has slowed down, and we are open one night a week, which is Thursday." .embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; } Each Thursday, the team starts at Union Gospel Mission (UGM) on Princess Street to pray for the first hour before venturing out from 8-10 p.m. "We prepare, get that armour of God on," says Barefoot. "Then we go down to the trailer, which we're trying to replace right now. There, we serve the people coffee, juice, sandwiches, hot dogs, or whatever we have. There's Christian music going all the time and fellowship. That's what's important, to be with them, to love them, to share with them and let them know they're not forgotten. They are seen and that God is near to the brokenhearted." The trailer their ministry uses is on its way out, and the group is hoping to raise funds to replace the trailer. Anyone interested in helping them out or donating can do so by sending it to Love Lives Here, P.O. Box 58023, Winnipeg, MB R2M 3S0. (Registered Charity #:11902 4966 RR 0001). What keeps Barefoot going after all these years? She says, "It's seeing a smile on their face. They look forward to seeing us. We have become their family. Many of these people? They're forgotten, and every day is a day for them to survive." The ministry will be celebrating God's faithfulness throughout their 40 years with a sold-out banquet this weekend. "These are precious souls. They are image-bearers of God Himself. To think that God does not think about them? It's impossible. They're important to Him, and every story means so much to the Lord."
