An Ile des Chenes woman is using her newfound love of jigging to show her support for Indigenous people.
During the spring, Janessa Roy started watching a YouTube video with her students of someone jigging. Instantly falling in love with the dance and being inspired by the woman doing it, she decided to give it a go. Roy is not Indigenous and says her family has strong ties with the Abenaki people in Quebec.
Education campaign kicks off as 150th anniversary of Treaty 1 nears
A six-week countdown has begun in advance of the anniversary of Treaty 1, which was signed in 1871 between the Crown and the Anishinaabe and Muskegon Cree peoples of southern Manitoba.
The virtual campaign kicks off with commemorative videos and a six-part series in newspapers with weekly articles penned by Treaty 1 Nation community members.
Colton Dixon: The joys of fatherhood and life back on the road
2020 and 2021 have been quite the whirlwind for Colton Dixon and his family.
In March of 2020, touring came to a halt for Colton as COVID-19 took over the world.
Shortly after that, Colton along with his wife Annie, announced that they were expecting twin girls. Those girls were born in August of 2020, but not without complication.

The leader of Manitoba's Metis Nation is asking people to dive into the history of Manitoba on Indigenous Peoples Day.
Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) President David Chartrand is disappointed that another year is going by without having Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations in Selkirk. As they wait to gather, Chartrand is suggesting people take the day to learn about the history of Manitoba.
"One of the things people don't do enough, Canada as a whole, but they do not do enough to look and reflect on our history and look at what we have," Chartrand says.

Blanket exercises announced for Manitobans, sharing truth and reconciliation
Manitoba 150 is offering 50 blanket exercises across the province, bringing an opportunity to share truth from Indigenous culture and past to all Manitobans.

Joyce Perreault is rejoicing after her 14-year-old daughter with cancer fought off a fever last week, saying, "We felt those prayers."
"Tuesday morning she developed a fever, but within half an hour it went away. Wednesday morning and her whole body was heated up," says Perreault who has been at the Children's Hospital with her daughter for a week now.

Churches and faith gatherings set to open again this weekend
Manitobans will be getting back to worshipping together this weekend, although limits are still in effect.
Dr. Brent Roussin and Premier Brian Pallister made the announcement at a press conference Wednesday morning. A number of restrictions will ease, including on worship gatherings, beginning at 12:01 a.m Saturday, June 26.
Ministry leaders react to worship restrictions easing
While some churches are jumping on board to in-person services this weekend with the easing of restrictions, others are not quite ready.
On June 23, 2021, at 11:00 am, Premier Brian Pallister alongside Dr. Brent Roussin announced that starting June 26 at 12:01 am, churches would be able to host in-person gatherings up to 25 per cent capacity or 25 people, whichever is less, as well as able to host outdoor services with up to 50 people. Other restrictions are still in place, like wearing masks indoors and distancing outside.
Bible camp running day camps, hoping for more in August
Gimli Bible Camp is thrilled they can run camp this summer and hoping the day camps they run in July might turn into overnight in August, depending on restrictions.
"July is going to look like it did last year. We could only do day camps so we would bus children up from the city from a different area of the city every day," says Don Roe, the Director of Gimli Bible Camp.
The areas of Winnipeg they pick up children for day camp include North Kildonan, North End, Elmwood, and the West Side.

Shortly before 10:50 p.m. on Wednesday, a 22-month-old boy was at a home in Steinbach being cared for by his babysitter. When a 56-year-old woman who the babysitter knew entered the home, taking the boy and fleeing on a bicycle.

After a year like no other, the principal of Steinbach Christian School says he is proud of the way their student council made lemonade out of lemons.
Principal Emery Plett says they planned a lot of fun COVID-friendly activities, hoping to create some morale among the students. He says because of their class sizes they were able to have their students in the building every day, all day throughout the school year.
